day 3: think for yourself- your thoughts are legitimate
As an avid social media user, I come across the same stories reposted with different captions all day. The day Kylie Jenner finally announced her pregnancy, she was probably trending on every news source worldwide, and is still talked about in every tabloid for something she said about her daughter. When you open Snapchat or Instagram, the first thing I see is something Kardashian/Jenner related, and I want to turn my phone off. I am wildly entertained by the Kardashians, I will honestly say that. But when does it become so overwhelming, and take over what’s really important?
I believe that they only serve that entertainment purpose, and I think that’s okay. The only positive I take away from the Kardashian/Jenners, is that their following is so massive, they can bring attention negative or positive to any issue. Kim alone has over 100 million Instagram followers, so when she posts something, there is always a guaranteed audience. However, I can’t seem to follow any of that family’s social media accounts…
I may be contradicting myself here, but I only follow a few celebrities on social media. I really think the influence celebrities have over society is something we need to talk about. I really appreciate some celebrities, who use their platform for a good cause, and to actually speak on real issues. I don’t know how genuine or fabricated their stories are that they stand behind, but I tend to take it for face value.
Wow, it feels really lame to say this, but I think following celebrities on social media takes an effect on your overall mental health. I feel like as a society we are constantly comparing ourselves to people who aren’t real. I also will admit I was very caught up in Kylie’s pregnancy. Maybe because it was completely unavoidable, or I just wanted to be in the know like my peers. But looking back on it, did I really need to check my phone when I was with my friends to check in to see if KYLIE posted something? Oh my god, I am so embarrassed. If you follow people solely for their music or art, I think that’s different. But to follow to keep up with their lifestyle is a waste of time. It really has taken me a while to realize this.
I don’t like lying in bed or sitting on the bus scrolling through Instagram and seeing celebrities using their platforms to send a negative message. Yeah, we all like to have fun, and that’s totally okay! But when your only purpose is spending money and party rockin’, my respect for you is very, very low. You have a voice, and you have a platform! For this, I like following real people who are following their dreams. I hope this doesn’t make me seem like an asshole, because we all like to let loose once and a while, and I even used to use my social media just to show off my partying and friends throughout high school and my undergrad .
On social media, I love following travellers who have less than 1,000 followers and are allowing you to live through their eyes, or mental health accounts whose sole purpose is to inspire whoever is listening. People who are out there just LIVING and don’t care how famous they are, how much money they make, or who’s listening. They want to tell a story on a enormous platform.
Seriously, I just really like real people! I like people like you and I, who are just out here doing their day to day and doing their best to be successful. I like measuring success in my own eyes, and not by the standards by others. So, call me weak for not following very successful people on Instagram, but I like to see people doing good and doing good for others.
And that’s how I’m feeling today.
